TYPES OF SHUTTLES IN BADMINTON

  • Nylon Shuttles
  • Feather Shuttles
  • Air Shuttles

NYLON SHUTTLES

As the name suggests these are made from nylon(plastic) material and are extremely popular among recreational players.

Some Features of Nylon Shuttles

Durability:  There’s absolutely no doubt that these shuttles are far more durable than feather ones, typically a single shuttle can last for an entire match( 3 sets) with intense rallies. Also, you don’t really need to worry about the shuttle breakage like the feather ones. So whether or not you mishit a shot it won’t be affecting the flight of these birdies in the slightest. However, this doesn’t mean that it can’t get damaged not during rallies. Even though these are much more durable however, their skirt portion isn’t that rigid in comparison to its compatriot. This implies that if you applied too much pressure on that portion chances of it getting damaged are high. In addition, always handle these shuttle by holding it from cork & not from the nylon part.

Price: This is often one among the reasons why even good skilled players who are on a budget use these shuttles. If we talk about the price per piece of a nylon shuttle and a feather shuttle which is of low varient, it is exactly the same. Even though the feather shuttle only last for about 11 points as compared to a nylon shuttle which can survive an entire 3-set match. So using a nylon shuttles is actually a good option if you’re on a tight budget and you can simply invest that spare money in some good quality shoes & racket.

Flight: Quality of a shuttle are often judged by how consistent the flight of a shuttle is. One of the reason as to why feather shuttles are utilized in international matches is because flight of nylon shuttles isn’t much consistent in comparison to feather shuttle.

FEATHER SHUTTLES

As the name suggests these are made from feather which might be of goose or duck.

Types of Feather shuttles

  • Duck feather shuttles
  • Goose feather shuttles

Duck Feather Shuttles

These shuttles are made up of the feathers of Duck. And all the feathers are plucked from the left-wing of duck in order to maintain the consistency of feather quality. It is still an unknown proven fact that where these companies get such larges number of feathers. Appearance: Generally these are white in color. Price: Duck feather shuttle is less expensive as compared to the goose ones due to less durability of these feathers. Durability: These feathers are far more fragile as compared to goose ones, here you need to completely understand that we are not talking about the features itself but about breaking of the shaft (a stick to which feathers are attached). Duck feather is far likely to break from the shaft and because of this they’re less durable than goose feather. Flight: It’s quite consistent among all the shuttles

Goose Feather Shuttles

These shuttles are made from goose feathers and in order to maintain the feather quality, they are plucked from the same wing.It is not a hard and fast rule that duck feather as compared to goose feather is quite inferior.

Nowadays, companies like carlton provides much cheaper shuttle made from goose feather as compared to the duck ones. However, the durability of these shuttles is far less in comparison to duck feather shuttle. So it’s not just the feather which constitutes the quality of shuttle however, how they’re processed also plays a very important role.

Price: As already mentioned some of the companies offer these shuttles at a much cheaper price. However, the quality of those aren’t up to the mark, as typically a shuttle made from goose feather is much more expensive due to production quality.

Flight: Same with the flight the consistency it provides in-flight of shuttle is extremely good compared to the duck feathers shuttle.

WHAT SHUTTLES ARE USUALLY USED IN OLYMPIC AND OTHER INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS?

Well it completely depends on which company sponsored that specific tournament & accordingly these companies provide there best shuttles. For instance, if an international tournament is sponsored by Yonex then a AS 50 will be used. For Olympics, to provide high quality shuttle with consistent flight, companies make special edition shuttles solely for this kind of tournament.
